CAMPER VAN MATTRESSES

We make bespoke camper mattresses - modular, sectional, removable covers - for all van models.

Modular Camper Mattress Packs

First, we'll cover modular mattress packs. We emphasise the modular aspect because they're designed to optimise dining mode, lounge mode, and the hammock position - which from our perspective is one of the best positions in the kit.

There are profiles of every colour, like personalities and thoughts, but having the hammock position at sunset after a day at the beach, mountains, climbing, a bike route, or simply city tourism is, in our opinion, exceptional pleasure. The hammock position is like having a sofa to simply watch the horizon, or the "garden of your little portable home", or to put a tablet or laptop on and watch a film or series.

Just to clarify, like all our camper furniture kits, the mattress packs are made bespoke for each vehicle.

Can you feel the joints between pieces when sleeping? In the vast majority of vehicles, you can't feel the joints. Why? We make them bespoke, meaning we size the mattresses to go from wall to wall, so they fit snugly laterally - meaning it looks like one piece. The walls don't allow the joints to open as they act as stops, and depth-wise we make the mattresses overhang both at the back doors/tailgate and at the front, so the mattress can't open depth-wise because it's stopped by the boot at the back and the driver and passenger seats at the front.

What material are the mattresses made from and do they include memory foam? Our mattress packs are made from high-density D30 foam, 8cm thick, and don't normally include memory foam, because we particularly don't recommend it - this is simply our opinion, not an absolute truth, but we'll detail point by point why we hold this opinion.

High-Density D30 Foam Characteristics:

Firm density of 30kg per cubic metre. It's recommended especially for seats, camper mattresses, general upholstery - uses requiring greater hardness and foam durability. It maintains its shape and firmness. Multiple uses.

Why 8cm?

In the camper world, thickness usually ranges from 6 to 10cm. We make 8cm firstly because it's a middle ground, but mainly because at 8cm, our camper furniture kits fit with bespoke mattress packs and the boot tray. This way, nobody can see what's inside the boot.

Also worth highlighting - what matters is density, not thickness. Thickness does influence comfort, but at 8cm we know from our experience that they're ideal for comfort.

People often worry they'll feel the wood, and the answer is absolutely NO - the mattress packs are genuinely comfortable. We could share anecdotes from different customers about their satisfaction, but ultimately what matters is your final assessment, as each of us is unique. That's why we invite anyone in the area to come to our workshop and try the mattress packs in person. If you're not in the area, you can rest assured and trust that they're genuinely comfortable.

About Memory Foam

We don't usually fit memory foam precisely to maintain the 8cm we've discussed. With 6, 8, or 10cm, memory foam's performance isn't very relevant. We think this because initially, in our inexperience, we put memory foam in some of our mattress packs - not all, but a certain number.

It got to the point where we even made ourselves "cushions for the house" for the sofa and lounge with memory foam, and I can tell you subjectively that at home we had to open the zip to see where the memory foam was because we couldn't feel by touch where it was. That says it all - for us, a very clear placebo effect was generated, always in our opinion.

I started researching this and discovered that memory foam is a mixture of foam and latex, and it's very effective when it has solid bases with different layers from more to less and relatively thick thicknesses - like home mattresses, where its effectiveness is really noticeable because it has a much broader base and a larger memory foam layer.

I understood that camper mattresses are doing this effect in miniature, and by doing it in miniature, its effect is also "mini". Durability-wise, the larger the D30 base, the greater the durability of the mattress packs will be, not forgetting that high-density D30 foam mattresses are firm and comfortable in their own right.

3-Piece Camper Mattress Packs or Accordion Mode:

When camper furniture kits are fitted without a table - normally they include a table, but sometimes due to the height of the person or people using it, or because of large equipment that needs to be carried, the interior table is omitted.

A clear example is MPVs or 4x4s which, being lower than vans, don't allow you to sit without your head touching the roof, so different furniture without a table is used, and in these cases, 3-piece mattresses are fitted in most cases.

Why 3 pieces and not accordion mode? Accordion mode's only advantage is that the pieces are joined, ensuring they won't separate and create uncomfortable joints. Its major disadvantage is that when folding it takes up more space and usually blocks part of the rear window visibility.

What we do and suggest: normally, like with modular mattress packs, we make the furniture and mattresses bespoke, so by making them bespoke, we ensure they press against the driver and passenger headrests and touch the tailgate or rear doors, achieving everything staying together as if it were one piece - so we have the main advantage of accordion mode but can solve its main disadvantage by having separate mattresses when storing them, giving us greater versatility.
