Blackout Insulation for Camper Vans
9-Layer Window Blackout Insulation with Self-Threading Suction Cups
Another extremely important item is blackout insulation.
First and foremost, they give us privacy - something fundamental. Secondly, they insulate incredibly efficiently in our opinion, especially from heat, but also from cold - in this second case, particularly from condensation and humidity.
A Real Example:
We took a trip to the Dolomites - a camper paradise, by the way. One night, we decided not to put up the blackout insulation because there was nobody around - it's a vast area with many spots where you can stay overnight in beautiful landscapes with a sense of solitude.
Well, we woke up in the middle of the night, cold, and our blanket or duvet wasn't keeping us warm. Why? Because the humidity had "soaked through us". We put up the blackout insulation and the cold evaporated - with the same blanket, we were now warm.
What I want to convey is that it doesn't insulate from cold as such - if it's 7 degrees outside and 12 inside, it might raise the temperature by 2 or 3 degrees, but it's the feeling of avoiding humidity that's really efficient. What I want to get across is that whilst blackout insulation is noticeable in cold weather, if you go to the Pyrenees in winter, you'll almost certainly be cold - there's no getting around it.
On the other hand, with heat, it really is noticeable temperature-wise - it insulates brilliantly from heat. You can leave your vehicle in full summer sun, and when you return to the van, it'll definitely be warm, but the thermal relief sensation is very significant.
Materials & Quality
Focusing on the material properties of blackout insulation: Isoflex 9-layer material, cotton edging, and high-quality self-threading suction cups.
The material - practically everyone uses the same thing, Isoflex 9-layer - nothing to say here, we're not going to discover what's already been discovered.
But we do want to highlight and emphasise the suction cups. As I say, many questions focus on the 9 layers, when that's standard - what's not standard and doesn't usually get attention are the suction cups, which are just as important as the 9 layers, because if you don't have quality suction cups, the 9 layers are useless.
All of us, or a large percentage, and we from our experience, have memories of those blessed suction cups coming unstuck or even falling off - very common - and then finding them, God knows where.
That's why self-threading suction cups are so important to us - they're screwed to the insulation, they can't get lost, and they're quality suction cups where if they do come unstuck, you'll probably just need to clean the glass or the cup, but once clean, they stick with great durability.
